Synesthesia Literary Journal

Submission Guidelines

We read year-round!

New and emerging artists are encouraged to submit their work! We strive to offer works from writers and artists of all ages, some new, and some seasoned.

We accept original works of:

* Poetry (up to 5 poems)
* Flash fiction (between 150 and 1,000 words)
* Short fiction (up to 7,500 words)
* Nonfiction (up to 7,500 words)
* Plays (up to 7,500 words)
* Reviews: books, event, and commentaries (up to 3,500 words)
* Visual art
* Music

We are open to a wide range of styles and forms in contemporary poetry. We are always watching for fresh and quickened language, and work that offers a smart purchase on what it means to be alive. Poems that go deeper, are multi-layered, and have universal importance speak to our sense of aesthetics. We also like work that explores humor, satire, truth, and compassion.

Please send all submissions to synesthesia(dot)editors@gmail(dot)com

Written submissions must be ALL IN ONE DOCUMENT (.doc or .docx) and include a cover letter with a brief biography of up to 100 words, a .jpeg photo of yourself (preferably 400×300 or larger), the title of each piece, number of pieces being submitted, the date, and your name, address, phone number and email. Please do not paste these into the body of the email. Submissions that do not follow the guidelines will be declined.

Art must be submitted in a .jpeg file with the cover letter in a separate file attached to the same email.

Music must be submitted in an .mp3 or .wav file with the cover letter in a separate file attached to the same email.

We prefer previously unpublished work, but will accept previously published work with a byline showing where the work was published. We read year-round, do not charge reading fees of any kind, and are conscientious about responding to manuscripts promptly. Simultaneous submissions are accepted. In return we ask that you honor our policy of notification by writing to us when work has been accepted by another publication. This journal is copyrighted with rights reverting to the artist after publication.

Please familiarize yourself with the Synesthesia before sending us your work.

It’s helpful for us to see more than a single short poem, so that we may have a fuller sense of your work. If you’re submitting poetry, please put no more than one poem per page.

Please send no more than two manuscripts within a four-month period.

By submitting to Synesthesia you are agreeing by electronic signature for us to publish your work in our journal and/or anthology and it will remain in our archives. If you should wish to have any of your work removed from the archives, please send us your request in a letter.

If you don’t hear from us within a few weeks, that’s because your manuscript has been screened and is under active consideration. Please wait two months before querying us.

We look forward to reading your work, seeing your art, and listening to your music! Thank you for your interest in Synesthesia!

  1. Dear editors,
    do you accept poems in translation from foreign language to English?

  2. Dear editors:

    Do you have a set theme for the submissions? I completely read the guidelines, and if you did include a theme, I must have missed it. Thank you!

  3. One of my novels features a woman with synesthesia. It was a NYT bestselling book. Would you consider a chapter about this character and her discovery of syn? The book is Lost & Found, published by Harper Collins.

  4. What are your word limits for short fiction?

  5. Tried to print out these guidelines, but they ran 4 pages including the replies and the words were muddled up with the graphics of the replies. Is there some way to find a clean copy of just the guidelines?
    thanks

    • Hi Sylvia,

      If you send your request to our submissions email (synesthesia.editors@gmail.com), I can provide you with a clean copy of the submission guidelines.

      Best,

      Christopher Gorrie
